The name by which we're represented, mishibizhii, is an Ojibwe word that refers to water spirits called the "water panthers", and more simply the "panther" of flesh and blood, that we are all familiar with.
As the story goes, the first clergy to meet the Ojibwe and become exposed to their customs had become mistaken that the mishibizhii were evil spirits that meant harm, since they represented rough water, rapids, and storms.
Ojibwe birch bark scrolls bore abstract drawings of the mishibizhii, with spiky fur and jagged lines drawn about.
To the Ojibwe, these lines represented the strong spiritual nature of these beings.
They were not good nor evil. They simply were.
Despite this, and likely thanks to language and cultural gaps, the Christian clergymen equated the mishibizhii with devils and demons.
Sometime later, English scholars had shown the Ojibwe what money and documents from England looked like.
In seeing the proud heraldic lion drawn there, "The Lion of England," complete with spiky mane and tailtuft, the Ojibwe said that they were mishibizhii.
This observation put these spirits into perspective for the European people, shining a more positive light upon them...
and also explains why mishibizhii has also come to mean "lion".
To those that follow his guidance, Lion teaches great patience, intuition, imagination and creativity.
His spirit lives here.
